making friends on public transit

so the 71 from u district was so fucking crowded but thank god i got a seat

sat next to someone with a service dog and we smiled at each other

then i transferred onto the link and sat down next to the same person!!

and we smiled again! and then i got off at my stop at beacon hill and they were like “see ya!” and i was like “see ya!!!”

i need small things like this to get me through the day, obviously.

Today in labor history, February 11, 1903:  Japanese and Mexican laborers unite to form the Japanese-Mexican Labor Association to fight the labor contractor responsible for hiring at the American Beet Sugar Company in Oxnard, California.  They refused to work until their grievances were addressed and by the first week in March, over 90% of the county’s beet industry labor force had joined the JMLA, bringing the sugar industry to a standstill.  The laborers ultimately won most of their demands.

One of my coworkers is texting with me talking about how she’s still mindblown from the idea that desegregating schools may have been motivated by the fact that the state not overseeing people of color’s education led to them learning about their histories and revolutionary politics, so they wanted to put a stop to that by declaring they saw the wrong in their racist ways when really they just wanted to make sure that people of color had the most whitewashed education possible because who wants to see shit like this:

i know that visiting the support websites and reading updates can be emotionally overwhelming for a lot of us. so now you can easily access their addresses and cute faces with a rainbow glittery background! :)

i also included the phone and fax numbers for the DA, the prison, and the judge. i will be calling and faxing them all every weekday (unless matt or kteeo requests that i stop) to politely ask about how they are doing, see if matt is getting vegan food and kteeo is getting gluten-free food, and demand that they be released, the charges dropped, and the grand jury ended.

there is information about how you can send them commissary money and books as well as some things they’d like. if you are upset that you can’t be with people in the northwest right now you are not alone. there are so many other ways you can support matt and kteeo!

if anyone out there does not know what i am talking about there are links there to the support websites which will tell you everything you need to know about why these incredible people are being targeted by the state, in solitary confinement in federal prison. plus updates about their court dates and how you can support them!

i will also update the page regularly/whenever i feel like it and probably add lots of adorable pictures of kittens or something.

sandsgotokorea:

Dear friends, comrades, and loved ones,

This summer, we (Sam and Sarah) are embarking on a journey together to South Korea on a political exchange program called KEEP-ROK (Korea Education & Exposure Program - Republic of Korea). We are going on KEEP-ROK as the two delegates from HOBAK (Hella Organized Bay Area Koreans). As two young diasporic Korean queers and activists/organizers, this is a huge opportunity for us to learn and grow, both politically and personally.

KEEP is a two-week long program for Korean activists and organizers in diaspora to return to Korea to learn and build solidarity with activists on the peninsula towards our common goals of global peace and justice. From July 28 to August 11, we will be traveling all around southern Korea (Seoul, Kwangju, Jeju, etc.) to meet with some of the folks most directly impacted by and engaged in resisting violence, exploitation, and repression in the ROK. In past years, KEEP has met with organizations like MTU (Migrant Trade Union), Mamma Mia and TRACK (justice for unwed mothers and adoptees), KCTU (Korean Confederation of Trade Unions), Kkiri Kkiri and Dongsungaeja Inkwon Yondae (LGBT organizations), Solidarity Against Discrimination of Disabled, Naju Farmer’s Association, Poor People’s Solidarity, and many others. Upon returning to the US, we all commit to doing reportbacks and community education for at least one year.

This year, the aim of KEEP-ROK is to take those who struggle against militarism to those sites of struggle in southern Korea, with a commitment to continue anti-militarism work at home. With this objective in mind, we will be spending a much longer time in Jeju Island than in previous years to support and build with the activists and villagers of Gangjeong — a small village that the US and ROK governments have designated as being a “strategic” site for “maintaining security in East Asia,” and are attempting to build a naval base upon.

We’re both hella juiced for this trip to happen, on both political and personal levels. As Koreans who often have difficult and confusing relationships to our Korean identities, we feel that this experience will help us to grow clarity and insight within ourselves and our work. It would be so great for us to get to connect in person with rad Korean activists on the peninsula to share experiences, knowledge, and strategies with them, build with the other folks in our delegation who are from all across the US, and bring all of it back to our organizing and communities in the States.

However, as two newly graduated young people trying to make the rent, pay the bills, pay off our student loans, and support our families, we know we can’t afford to go on KEEP without a lot of support from our communities. Program fees and plane tickets will set us both back 4000 each, which is why we need your help. While any donation would help, we ask that you consider donating $10 (or more!) to our KEEP 2012 fund. We have less than a month to go — KEEP begins on July 28th, and we leave for Korea on the 27th! Will you help us to make this trip a reality?

What you can do:

  • REBLOG this post and share widely! (Email, Twitter, Facebook…)
  • FOLLOW our Tumblr (sandsgotokorea.tumblr.com) to follow our updates and learn about upcoming fundraising events in the Bay!
  • DONATE to our KEEP 2012 funds! Our paypal link is u (15% of funds raised will be donated to the activists of Gangjeong Village of Jeju Island.)

For donors who contribute:

  • $25.00, we will send you a hand-written postcard from Korea!
  • $50.00, we will write you a hand-written postcard, send you a zine that we will make about our experiences and what we learn on KEEP, and a hella cute original HOBAK hand-made reunification patch!!

Thank you all so much for your support and love! Stay tuned for more updates!

With love,
Sam and Sarah
