On cultural appropriation and why, just because not many people complain, it’s still wrong.

Today, I walked into your house and stole your big screen TV.

I can tell you right now? You will never get this TV back.

You can spend your money and buy a new one, if you want, but the fact is that I stole your TV.

You’re probably going to be mad. Really mad, in fact. You’re probably going to scream to the rooftops how some jackass stole your TV for the first few days, even weeks. You’re never really going to forget that time some guy busted into your house and stole your damn TV.

After a while, though, after you’ve got your new TV, after a lot of time has passed, you’ll probably mention it less and less. You’ll probably be less bothered by it. The TV is long gone, now, and you’re never getting it back.

But what if, one day, a year later, you saw the guy who stole your TV waltzing around with it, all nonchalant-like? You’d probably feel a surge of anger, wouldn’t you?

Look at that bastard who stole my TV just rolling around with it, no consequences, no nothing.

Because at the end of the day, just because time passed doesn’t mean your TV got LESS STOLEN. It was still yours and it was still taken.

What if it was your mom’s TV? Your mom’s TV got stolen, and nothing ever happened to the guy, and then your mom died.

And you saw that guy walking around with this TV you know was stolen from your mom and your fucking mom is dead and this asshole STILL has her TV.

You’d be real mad, wouldn’t you? You wouldn’t sit there, looking at him and thinking “oh, well, he stole that from my mom, my mom’s not even alive, it’s his TV now!”

What if that guy sells the TV to his friend? Does that make it less stolen now? The original thief profited off of something that didn’t belong to him and now a new guy owns it. That new guy didn’t steal it. That new guy didn’t know it was stolen. Is that TV less stolen, less rightfully your mother’s TV just because he sold it to someone who didn’t know better?

Of course not.

That’s what this is. Just because time has passed since first theft, just because there aren’t always obvious and active complaints, doesn’t mean it’s not still theft.

why they need this shit explained is beyond me.

same goes for cultural artifacts. you stole it? well its fucking still mine and still stolen. fucking return it, you piece of shit!

these people have no concept of fucking basic consideration for others.
