televisionismygirlfriend:

welp this video is what i was afraid of so buckle up kids.

here’s the difference between actual misogyny and non misogyny:

shit white girls say to black girls was NOT. SEXIST. I REPEAT. NOT SEXIST.

this shit on the other hand?

sexist.

here’s why:

white dudes have wayyy more power in society than women.

white women have wayyy more power in society than black women.

black women are also women. with less power than white women. engaging in a cultural critique of their oppressors. not sexist. the end.

so even if this video, shit girls say to gay guys, is truthful about sexuality and stereotypes and shit (which it is) and sometimes funny (which it is).

it’s still sexist for a white man to use women, as a group, as the brunt of his joke.

especially when he’s using girls as some hegemonic category because obviously all women are straight and there are no lesbians.

so yeah, not trying to get involved in the oppression olympics here. but i am trying to point out an instance in these videos where sexism is an actually valid criticism, not racist nonsense.

And straight women have more power in society than gay men.

This video is about how straight women can perpetuate stereotypes and invalidate the individuality of gay men and assume that they all want to be walking breathing accessories.

Every single one of the things said in that video have been said to me personally and it’s annoying as fuck.

Just because you’re a woman does not mean that you are free of criticism when it comes to checking your privileges.

Straight women, even if they are more accepting of gay people, can be just as responsible for spreading and perpetuating stereotypes of gay men.

These videos are about social commentary, they HAVE to speak in generalities because it is impossible to capture every single context and subtext within every human interaction.

It’s going on the common experiences of gay men to explain how we are treated.

This video is not about how woman are treated.

It is about how straight women treat gay men.

zorascreation: Televisionismygirlfriend? Shut up and sit down. You just got served.

I’m just going to take your argument and break it down a bit.

1) “especially when he’s using girls as some hegemonic category because obviously all women are straight and there are no lesbians.”

Love how you’re just assuming that straight girls are the only ones who say shit like this. I’ve met plenty of queer women who say some of these things. yes, it’s still fucking offensive.

2) “so yeah, not trying to get involved in the oppression olympics here. but i am trying to point out an instance in these videos where sexism is an actually valid criticism, not racist nonsense.”

You got involved in the “oppression olympics” as soon as you started talking about how women, no matter the context, will always be more oppressed than men. Your statements are heteronormative and cis-centric. As zorascreation said, gay men are oppressed in ways straight women are not. Transmen are, as well.  You’re basically saying that gay men, a traditionally marginalized, oppressed group of people (the Holocaust, much?) have absolutely no right to point out their oppression…because that in, and of itself, is somehow a form of oppression.

You basically just whined about calling people out on their shit.

Gay men are definitely objectified by straight women. They’re fetishized in a way that is somehow OK in our society. It’s not. It’s not OK (as depicted in the picture) to grab a person’s hand and force them to touch your body in a certain way. Against their will. When they clearly don’t want to. If a dude did that to a lesbian, as in grabbed her hand and told her to feel his dick to see if it was big enough, that shit would be called out on, immediately. But because this is a straight girl, and she’s just “innocently” grabbing a gay guy’s hand, and because he’s a guy, clearly he wants sex with a woman anyways, it’s NOT A BIG DEAL.

The shit this video points out happens every day, and it’s wrong. In arguing that gay guys can’t point this shit out (albeit, in a humorous way), you are basically saying that “oppression is OK, as long as it’s done at the hands of women.”
